Other Uses for Cookie Cutters – Sweets

Pretty Desserts

Press cookie cutter into an iced cake. Use a pastry tube to color the indent line and/or color in the middle.

Cut out shapes from rolled fondant and add to a cake. This works really well with flowers. Try coloring small balls of fondant and mixing together to create swirly colors.

Gently place an open cookie cutter on top of a cake. Sprinkle colored or powered sugar. Works nicely on an unfrosted cake. Jimmies work nicely on a frosted cake. Or, spread jam inside the cookie cutter.

Use your alphabet cookie cutters to make a name or message on a cake.

Slice a pound cake into ½ inch slices. Press with cookie cutter shapes. Frost. Serve or use to decorate a larger cake.

Cut out shapes in pie crust. Lay on top of pie to create an interesting pie top.

Fancy Fruit

When making a melon basket, scoop out some large pieces and slice about a ¼ inch thick. Use your melon baller to fill most of the basket. Use your mini cookie cutters to make festive melon cut outs on top.

Or insert a lollipop stick and freeze the melon for a cool, healthy summer treat. Experiment with skewers and put a few pieces on one to serve to the adults.

Rice Krispies Treats®
Cut out your treats and serve on a platter or cut and DON’T remove from the cookie cutter. Instead, decorate with candies and frosting. Let set and wrap tightly with plastic wrap. Hand out as tiny take home gifts and favors.

Fruit Pop Freezies

Wrap one side of the cookie cutter tightly with aluminum foil. I recommend you buy the good foil for this. Pour in juice and freeze. I have had more success by partly freezing the juice, slushing it in the blender and then filling the cookie cutters.

Stained “Glass” Candy

Again, wrap one side of the STAINLESS STEEL METAL cookie cutter tightly with aluminum foil. I recommend you buy the good foil for this. Spray inside with cooking spray and set on a cookie sheet. Place hard candy pieces inside the cookie cutter and melt in the oven. Jolly Rancher candies give you clear “glass”. Peppermints make opaque glass. I tried this two years ago and it is very messy and hard to get right so you are warned.

Another twist. Roll out cookie dough. Cut large round cookies with a juice glass. Cut out shapes with mini cookie cutters from the center of these round cookies. Crush any hard candy and place in the center of the cookie. Bake as usual.

Chocolate

Cookie cutters and cookie molds can be used to create chocolate shapes. You can wrap cutters with foil and pour in melted chocolate or spread melted chocolate in a jelly roll pan lined with waxed paper and cut out just like dough. Use to top cakes or garnish a cookie platter.

Chocolate Marshmallows and S’more Fondue

Cut a large marshmallow in half through the diameter. Cut into a shape with a mini cookie cutter. Dip in melted chocolate. Sprinkle with jimmies. Let cool. Or serve cut out marshmallows around a chocolate fondu with cut out bits of graham cracker for fondue s’mores. Put out tiny bowls of sprinkles and jimmies for dipping. And don’t just make this for the kids. Everyone loves s’mores.

Petit Fours

Make sweet petit fours cutting out and stacking slices of pound cake, fondant and jams. Or make savory petit fours cutting out and stacking deli meat, cheese and pickles.

Brownie Cut Outs

Bake brownies in a large cake pan so they come out thinner than usual. Cut shapes with cookie cutters. Eat the leftovers!

Fudge Plus

Cut set fudge with cookie cutters. Then dip in melted, colored white chocolate. And sprinkles or nuts.

Cookie Decorating Party

Bake ahead a variety of simple shapes. Provide plenty of icing and candies and sprinkles or ask the guests to bring some. For children, this is a fun activity when the adults are doing less fun stuff. Or add to the activity list of a birthday party.
